The cases are all different, covering different products and different patents and different technologies.

The US case involved six patents, two of which were for the “black rectangular design” and the “white rectangular design.” The Japanese case was about technology that synchronized mobile music players with personal computers.

There are more cases pending, and every result seems to be under appeal.  The global battle is a long way from done.

 

Risk Management Perspective: 

Intellectual Property Law and Patent Enforcement is a complex expensive game, and ultimately only settling the issues will resolve very much.  The court actions are all preludes to who has a stronger hand in the settlement discussions.
